Harnessing Body Intelligence to Overcome Emotional Blockages: A Transformative Coaching Approach

Are you ready to free yourself from old emotional patterns and gain deeper insights into your behaviour? Imagine replacing old insecurities and limiting beliefs with a renewed sense of curiosity, connection, and inner peace. This approach is possible when we begin to embrace the power of body intelligence and lean into the processes of self-awareness and emotional regulation. In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of using the autonomic nervous system, the polyvagal theory, and the mBraining approach in coaching, and how they can guide you towards lasting transformation.

The Power of Curiosity Over Certainty

In today’s world, we often chase certainty. Whether it’s a need for security, validation, or control, we become fixated on knowing what will happen next. However, as Todd Kashdan so brilliantly explores in his book Curious, embracing curiosity can be the antidote to our need for certainty. When we start to replace the pursuit of certainty with a mindset of curiosity, we open ourselves up to exploration, growth, and deeper self-awareness.

One powerful way to cultivate curiosity is through understanding and using the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS plays a crucial role in regulating our emotions and reactions to the world around us. It acts as the body’s internal safety monitoring system, responding to stressors and triggers without our conscious input. As we become more aware of how our ANS operates, we gain the ability to lean into difficult feelings and let them pass, rather than engaging in the endless cycle of fight, flight, or freeze.

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Emotional Healing

The autonomic nervous system consists of two branches that significantly influence our emotional states and overall wellbeing: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). These two branches work together to maintain balance and regulate our internal state.

  1. Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): This is our fight or flight response. When activated, it prepares the body to face a threat by increasing heart rate, redirecting blood flow to muscles, and releasing adrenaline. This state can be triggered by perceived dangers or emotional stressors, often causing us to react impulsively, rather than responding consciously.

  2. Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): This branch includes the vagus nerve, which is a key player in calming and restoring balance to the body. The PNS is responsible for the “rest and digest” functions. The vagus nerve is our body’s natural reset button, helping us return to a state of calm after stress. It plays a significant role in our emotional regulation, especially through the ventral vagal system, which helps us feel safe, connected, and socially engaged.

In coaching, we can help clients become more attuned to their body’s cues and learn to consciously activate the PNS—particularly the ventral vagal state. This allows them to regulate emotions, dissolve old triggers, and create a sense of safety and calm, even in challenging situations.

Polyvagal Theory: A New Lens for Healing

Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory has revolutionized our understanding of the autonomic nervous system. According to Porges, our bodies have three primary states that influence how we interact with the world:

  1. Ventral Vagal State (Social Engagement): This is the most resourceful state where we feel safe and open to connection. In this state, the vagus nerve supports feelings of calm, connection, and social engagement. When we’re in the ventral vagal state, we’re more likely to make conscious decisions, act with empathy, and form meaningful relationships.

  2. Sympathetic Nervous System (Mobilisation/Fight or Flight): This state is activated in response to perceived danger, preparing the body to act quickly in order to protect itself. While it is important for survival, excessive or chronic activation of the SNS can lead to stress, anxiety, and overreaction.

  3. Dorsal Vagal State (Freeze or Shutdown): When the body perceives that it cannot escape danger or mobilise effectively, it can enter a freeze response, leading to dissociation, shutdown, or emotional numbing. This can be a protective mechanism, but prolonged activation of the dorsal vagal system can lead to depression and other mental health challenges.

By using Polyvagal Theory in coaching, I guide clients to identify which state their body is in during moments of stress. Once they recognise their state, they can use tools and techniques to bring themselves back to the ventral vagal state, where they feel safe and open to possibility.

mBraining: Integrating the Wisdom of the Heart, Brain, and Gut

One of the most powerful tools I use as a Master Coach is mBraining, a groundbreaking approach that integrates the intelligence of the heart, brain, and gut. Developed by Grant Soosalu and Marvin Oka, mBraining helps individuals access the deeper wisdom that resides in their multiple brains—head, heart, and gut.

  • Heart Intelligence: The heart is often referred to as the “seat of emotion.” It’s deeply connected to our feelings of compassion, empathy, and connection. By tapping into heart intelligence, clients can shift from emotional reactivity to emotional responsiveness.

  • Gut Intelligence: The gut, often called the “second brain,” is home to the enteric nervous system (ENS), which houses more neurons than the spinal cord. This brain in your gut is responsible for your gut feelings or “instincts.” Through mBraining, clients can learn to trust their gut and make decisions from a place of deep inner knowing.

  • Head Intelligence: Of course, the head brain is our logical and analytical centre. In mBraining, we work to harmonise the wisdom of the head, heart, and gut, rather than allowing one brain to dominate the others.

By integrating mBraining into coaching sessions, we tap into the entire body’s intelligence, allowing for profound transformation. Instead of just “thinking” our way through problems, we use the wisdom of all three brains to make aligned, resourceful decisions and overcome old emotional patterns.

The Journey of Self-Awareness and Healing

When clients come to coaching, they often bring with them long-held beliefs and emotional patterns, many of which stem from childhood experiences. For example, as I reflect on my own experience of feeling humiliated in a classroom, I recognise how this moment shaped a deep-seated insecurity. By observing this experience through the lens of an adult with more life experience, I can see how my younger self might have perceived the situation as a funny, lighthearted moment—something that would have likely been harmless to others.

However, by holding onto the emotional charge of that experience, I unknowingly created a story about myself. Over time, this story became part of my personality and the lens through which I saw myself. The power of body intelligence and Polyvagal Theory allows us to let go of these old stories by recognising the emotional charge, leaning into it, and giving ourselves the space to heal.

How Coaching with Body Intelligence Can Help You

As a Body Intelligence Coach, I facilitate this transformative process for individuals by helping them:

  • Recognise and release emotional blockages stored in the body
  • Cultivate deeper self-awareness through the wisdom of their heart, brain, and gut
  • Learn to regulate their nervous system, moving from a state of stress to calm and connection
  • Reconnect with their innate sense of safety and wellbeing, so they can navigate life with confidence and ease

Through focused attention, guided coaching, and a commitment to new behaviours, clients can create lasting changes that ripple through every aspect of their lives.
